This guys been hanging around a couple days (on my computer) decided to make him useful.
  • March 23rd

This Mocker shot has some issues but I prefer it to other cleaner shots I got. Clean=boring as in grey bird with grey BG sitting on rebar.

Turt on a snag..Or.. Jurassic Park

Our 'almost' national bird:-) Only the 2nd time seeing these guys in the wild.
BJ portrait..,meaning I lopped the boys tail off:-)
  • March 18th

Its a Scaup and best guess a Lesser Scaup. Smaller than mallards and stupid fast in flight with no real rhyme or reason to their flight pattern. Real funny guys to watch.

Coot, the feet on these guys are just nuts! They were coming up on land in huge groups, never have seen that before and like Don said with feet like that he'd stay in the water too.:-) Toned down the one rock just a smig for G.
  • March 16th

What in the world? First thoughts when Don an I saw these guys at the back of the Fish Hatchery:-)

The FH is huge. If we would have come in from the actual entrance it would have been a 1/2 mile walk back to the swamp/wooded area where the wood duck usually hang out. Instead of wood duck all tucked back in we find domestic Muscovy ducks.

Really like the BG:-)

Would you be quiet Fred, your embarrassing me.

Yea a goose, sometimes ya just gotta love the light:-) This guy was a hoot and the more he threw a hissy the more his mate slunk down. Shot through a dead rush, which is the funky spot on her wing, wasn't paying attention, darn.
This shot about tops it for me, a mink! Rare in these parts and rarely seen, in fact my 2nd ever. He popped into his den right after this shot and yea I wish it was a better shot, take one of these anyway I can get it.

The WL so far, and it isn't even good weather yet, Sharp-Shinned and RTH's, Kestrels, N. Harriers, GBH, 3 species of ducks, songbirds are rolling in, mink, muskrats (boy do those go together) Killdeer. Something new everyday. Gull and C geese, but every mud puddle in Ohio has the latter. I'm probably missing something in this list. Dawes Arboretum now has a WL and the eagles are back nesting at the Fish Hatchery!
  • March 8th

Doves in my favorite tree.

I love snow and the photo ops that come with it. It is also the time I really like to use the 300mm and this time with the TC for a bit more reach..Works great as long as everything is relatively still:-)
  • March 7th

A bit of humor. New gull sport at the wetlands, fish flipping. Someone got the bright idea to stock the WL with bluegill, fine and good till we had the big freeze.

More noise in this than I like but that is human error:-)

Do I ever flub up??? Often enough:-) None of the R-'s would display today, usually when they call they throw out their wings a bit and the red really shows

    Glad you like the shot.

Nice exposure (do you ever flub it up?) Great blacks in what looks like tough light. Wish we had all the birds you do! (Maybe we do and I just can't find them!) :)

they are such cute birds, very very noisy !nice exposure and sharpness..it's tough bird to photograph..I have seen some yellow-winged around here in the west, not sure they're there east ?

  • Thusie

    on March 10, 2007

Coulda been more R-wing if I hadn't messed up the shots when bird was calling and displaying:-)

Not a yellow-winged blackbird? ;-) Great bokeh, btw.

And he is sitting right where I would expect him to be. I grew up trying to get a picture of these birds in the swamps that I frequently played in and around. Of course when I was that young I only had an instamatic camera no 400mm glass to capture such a wonderful shot like you have here.

So that's what this bird is named. A few just started showing up here as well. Excellent exposure in that bright sunlight!
