Oh dare I say it? This is a 100% crop using the 35 f1.4L. Do I deserve such a lens? Probably not, but gonna have fun learning how to use it:-))

Bit of edit here, probably not a true 100% but close.

Got to spend about an hour out at the Fish Hatchery. Got too close to a Mute Swan during take off..TOO CLOSE:-) Have a sharp front half and a sharp back half of the bird. If I can get with in a mile of a GBH I'm happy.

Oh a couple new sq shots for anyone that wants to look:-) Last pg of the sq gallery.

This is the other half of the guy below. Not near a flashy as the male. In the bird world (most species) it takes two to raise a successful clutch.
An Evil Grackle for Chandi:-)
Month changes are rough:-)

I think this is my best Cardinal shot to date. Now to just get close enough I don't have to crop it to death I'll be happy.
Hum yep a squirrel, I like the pose:-)

Since Chandi thinks the birds around here have attitude, how about a chipmunk? Two shots with captions. I got a kick out of the action but I'm easy.
Sort of a squirrel (chipmunk) and maybe a bit soft, still thought it was cute.

Fun day at Dawes, not much time. Ran into a nice young woman, ok mid 30's, and her father. She had just gotten a Reb XT and so far has been having tons of fun. Freely admits the manual make no sense, her father ,an old film man, wants her to get into a camera club.
Anyway she was having problems with her one new lens, a 70-300 (not Canon) said every thing she shot with it was blurry. (better yet where she bought the camera they told her the XT had anti shake built right in, didn't touch that one). Long and the short of it I tried the lens on her camera and the lens didn't focus at all even using the focus ring!!! So I slapped my 70-200 on her XT and for the next few minutes she was in heaven. I also provided a bit of instruction on how to hold and a few other things and they are taking the hunk of junk back and getting the 70-200, should do her well along with the kit lens. Rather fun being around someone with a camera besides Don and it was way fun being able to help her out a bit. Needed to re-word that last bit, sounded tacky:-)

Here are just a few from today
Yes I know this is lame but as good as it gets today. Even the squirrels and jays were a tad put out by the weather.

Was going to go revisit this with a more suitable lens..didn't happen.

Don will be happy with this since it is one of his beloved Japanese Maples.

Here is a shot (actually 3),yes a squirrel but I do need to give you all a break. They are all almost the same but would like to know which on you like best. Thanks
Ohoo lookie it's a Grackle! These guys are spookier than the Cardinals if that is possible. Over the hill head shot and a huge crop, but hey it worked.

P.S. look at the shutter 1/160th talk about pure luck

Lots of wind today, best excuse I can come up with:-)

Humble apologies for yet another squirrel shot, but I had SO MUCH FUN with this. Does this not look like a studio shot? Perfect pose, BG the whole nine yards. Have a whole series with her 'posing', what a hoot.

Another day another flower.

Love the color combination and the patterns on the flower - great capture!

:-))Sebastian, up real close and personal, well that is what the 60 mm macro is for, but we almost always have some wind. Blah! With the new lens you can be about a 1'+ off have super fast shutter speed to freeze, then crop the you know what out of the shot. Way too much fun:-)

  • Sebastian Hosche

    on June 26, 2006

The crop brings out so much more of the flower detail - good choice. Now you've to get used to go a lot closer with your new lens as you can't zoom that far anymore. ;)

wow, that's a massive crop without losing much ! neat pic and lens !I think even one such shot makes it worth it, dont you think ( I'm justifying all lens purchasing for all time :))

Susan, LS, thanks for taking a look. 'The Lens' I needed that focal lengh and I needed fast for inside. Read the reviews, took a BIG gulp and went for it. Its fast, quiet and wonderfully (is that a word?) built. The weak link in this whole system is yours truly.

Very Nice! and hey! I want that lense! LS

100% might not have been quite right since they show up on the screen at 25% and I cropped to 100%:-) Went from 3504-2336px to what you see above (677-702) tiny bit of the origonal. I have never been able to crop that much and not have the shot look all weird.

Glad you like the shot, and thanks!

What does 100% crop mean? No crop? 100% cut off would be no picture. Do you mean you can crop down to a tiny bit of the original and still get this crisp look? If so, this is wonderful. And the smooth background is also wonderful. The light is also wonderful. Did I say this is a wonderful shot?

The purple detail is really great
